Potomac Law Group is pleased to announce a significant milestone in the effort to create a New LGBTQ+ Community Center in Washington D.C. Potomac Law pro bono clients, The DC Center and the Capital Pride Alliance, have signed a lease for premises located at 1827 Wiltberger Street NW, Washington DC, 20001.

The new 6,671 square-foot space will house significantly expanded services for the LGBTQ+ community, as well as provide subleased office space to LGBTQ+ non-profit organizations. The New LGBTQ+ Community Center, expected to be complete and open by mid-2023, is supported by a grant from the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development, as well as the involvement and support of other LGBTQ+ organizations.

“Congratulations to the entire project team on this major milestone,” said Potomac Law Partner Paul VanWagenen, who took the lead on negotiation and drafting of the lease. “Working with so many committed, passionate people to help advance their vision of a wonderful, safe space has been a joy. I know that the new, expanded Center will do a lot of good.”

Potomac Law has been providing pro bono legal services to the project since early 2021, when Potomac Law Partner Julia Anne Matheson learned of the project’s legal needs through her non-profit client Rainbow Families.

“We are grateful to Rainbow Families for bringing this matter to the firm and thrilled for this unique opportunity to support our local LGBTQ+ community,” said Matheson.

Mendi Sossamon, Potomac Law Partner, leads all legal services on the project and adds: “It has been my personal and professional privilege to help bring this effort to fruition. Tireless work from The DC Center, Capital Pride, and other non-profit LGBTQ+ organizations, with generous support from the DC government, made this milestone possible.”

In addition to Sossamon, VanWagenen, and Matheson, Potomac Law’s legal team includes Partner David Dowd with respect to government contracts and Partner Roberta Sutton Anderson with respect to insurance matters.
