Potomac Law is pleased to announce the formation of its Appellate & Critical Motions practice group. Spearheaded by new partner Ayesha N. Khan, the group will represent clients before state appellate courts, all of the federal circuits, and the U.S. Supreme Court. The group’s work will span the firm’s practice areas, from employment law and intellectual property to banking and finance, and from civil rights to complex commercial litigation.
“We are delighted to be adding someone with Ms. Khan’s experience to our team and we are excited to offer our clients appellate services of the highest caliber,” said Potomac Law Founder Benjamin Lieber. In addition to serving as primary counsel in appellate matters, the group will prepare amicus curiae briefs in appeals raising issues that substantially affect clients’ interests and consult with trial counsel from other firms on the preparation of dispositive motions and other critical filings.
About Ms. Khan
Ms. Khan has over two decades of experience litigating high-stakes appeals in state and federal courts. She has represented clients before the U.S. Supreme Court, every federal circuit, federal trial-level courts, state trial and appellate courts, the American Arbitration Association, and the Iran-U.S. Claims Tribunal. She is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court and every federal circuit, and is a member of the Washington, DC, Maryland, and California bars.
Ms. Khan has represented a diverse array of clients, from private individuals to commercial entities, school districts to municipalities, and state governments to the United States. She has litigated cases involving the First Amendment and other constitutional provisions, state and federal statutes regulating education, employment, and public funding, and contracts, torts, family law, and other aspects of common-law jurisprudence. She has also handled criminal appeals and authored scores of amicus curiae (friend-of-the-court) briefs on a wide range of legal issues.
Prior to joining Potomac Law, Ms. Khan was a Deputy Chief in the Appellate Section of the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. Before that, she served as the Legal Director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, overseeing a team of litigators handling trial and appellate litigation around the country. Ms. Khan has also served as a trial and appellate litigator for the ACLU and Covington & Burling LLP. She received her J.D. from Berkeley Law, where she served on the California Law Review.

Koslowe, who has authored dozens of appellate briefs for the U.S. Supreme Court and lower appellate courts, presented oral argument before every federal circuit, and handled appellate litigation at Shearman & Sterling LLP and the Civil Division of the U.S. Department of Justice before joining PLG; Galia Messika, who gained broad appellate experience as a partner at Kirkland & Ellis LLP, where she litigated complex commercial disputes involving securities, fraud, breach of contract, contested restructuring, trade secrets, and intellectual property; and Harry R. Silver, who has briefed and argued appeals in ten of the twelve federal circuits and many state appellate courts, written briefs for the U.S. Supreme Court, and was a partner at Patton Boggs LLP and Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld and worked in the Appellate Section of the Civil Division of the U.S. Department of Justice before coming to PLG. Like Ms. Khan, Mr. Koslowe, Ms. Messika, and Mr. Silver all have clerkship experience.
