Partner Vincent M. DeLuca is a registered patent attorney, with a practice focusing on patent procurement (preparation and prosecution), client counseling, and patent reexamination. Mr. DeLuca has successfully argued appeals before the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences and the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. In addition to patent procurement, Mr. DeLuca frequently counsels clients and prepares legal opinions on issues of infringement, validity, and enforceability. Mr. DeLuca also has significant litigation experience, having been involved in all aspects of patent litigation, from pre-filing investigations, to discovery, to trial, to appellate practice before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

An electrical engineer by education, Mr. DeLuca has broad technical experience in the electrical arts, having written and prosecuted patents on computer-implemented processes and software, video signal processing and telecommunications, including terrestrial and satellite cellular telephone systems, wireless (Bluetooth) communication systems, telephone switching hardware and software, virtual private networking (VPN), PSTN long-distance network systems, and radiotelephone technology. Mr. DeLuca also has experience in the fields of digital watermarking (encryption) methods and systems, optical, magnetic and solid state memory storage devices, fiber optics, medical diagnostics and monitoring systems, electronic security systems, semiconductor devices and lasers, thin-film transistor and liquid crystal display systems, facsimile systems, electronic imaging, general purpose digital circuits, and digital electronics systems.

Mr. DeLuca has been practicing in the intellectual property field since 1982, first serving as a Patent Examiner in the United States Patent and Trademark Office (1982-1986), during which time he was responsible for deciding issues of patentability of over 450 patent applications, then as a registered patent agent and, since 1987, as a registered patent attorney specializing in electronics and computer-related patents. He has also handled many cases in the mechanical and electromechanical fields and has written numerous patent applications directed to e-commerce and business methods.

  • Drafted and prosecuted patent applications to the successful issuance of multiple patents related to diabetes management and control systems on behalf of a large research University.
  • Drafted and prosecuted patent applications to the successful issuance of a large portfolio of patents in the field of medical imaging diagnostics and nuclear medicine on behalf of a large multinational corporation.
  • Prosecuted patent applications to the successful issuance of a large portfolio of patents on behalf of a leading company in the field of computer graphics processing systems.
  • Drafted and prosecuted patent applications to the successful issuance of a large portfolio of patents in the field of cellular communications and mobile telephony on behalf of a large multinational corporation.
  • Served as plaintiff patent counsel working with lead trial counsel in the successful jury trial and appeal in a patent infringement lawsuit related to terrestrial television broadcast transmitters (Comark Communications v. Harris Corporation, 156 F.3d 1182 (Fed. Cir. 1998).
  • Served as plaintiff patent counsel in the successful appeal and resulting settlement in a patent infringement lawsuit related to computer software security and protection (Pickholtz v. Rainbow Technologies, Inc., 284 F.3d 1365 (Fed. Cir. 2002).
